Decide what to save before taking flowers apart
Ask the person organizing the service which arrangements may be used for keepsakes. Some flowers may be going to another gathering or to different relatives. Agree on a few stems rather than cutting into a tribute someone expects to remain intact.
Take a clear photograph of the full arrangement and keep the enclosure card. Write a short private note about the sender or the reason you chose those flowers. If several relatives want a keepsake, label the selections before they are separated so they do not become mixed up during transport.
Press petals for a flat picture or bookmark
Mississippi State University Extension recommends small, thin plant material for pressing. Individual petals and small leaves are often more suitable than a whole thick flower. Place them without overlap between suitable absorbent, uncoated paper in a press or book. Protect any book you value from moisture and stains.
Allow the material to dry fully before mounting it. The extension guide describes about four weeks for its book-press method; the time is not a guarantee for every bloom or setup. Do not repeatedly open the press to rearrange fragile petals. Follow the linked instructions for the method you choose.
Compare methods that keep more of the shape
Air-drying and floral desiccants, such as silica gel, are other preservation methods described by University of Missouri Extension. A drying material supports flowers while removing moisture. Different flowers respond differently, so select a method suited to the bloom instead of treating a mixed arrangement as one uniform bunch.
Use a product intended for drying flowers and follow its label, including handling and storage precautions. Do not improvise a microwave treatment or chemical mixture. Dried flowers can change color and become brittle; preserving them does not keep them identical to the fresh arrangement.
Ask a specialist before sending valuable flowers
If you want a professionally finished frame or another custom keepsake, contact a preservation specialist before shipping or altering the flowers. Ask what condition they can accept, which blooms are suitable, and how they want the material packed. Their instructions may differ from the care steps for flowers you intend to keep fresh.

A photograph or card is also a keepsake
You can keep the memory without taking on a craft project. A photograph with the card, a short note about the service, or a shared family album can preserve the story of the tribute. Do not feel that allowing the fresh flowers to finish their life means losing what they represented.
If you are still deciding, keep the fresh arrangement cared for according to the florist’s instructions and ask for help promptly. Choose a project you actually want to keep, not one you feel obliged to complete. A few petals from a meaningful flower may be enough.
